Starting Monday, traffic around Square One Shopping Centre could get chaotic due to construction of the roundabout at the intersection with Square One Dr.* A- q* D# h+ ^! h# C) B3 E
Having already suffered weeks of lane closures as preliminary curb work was being done, motorists traveling along Duke of York, north of Burnhamthorpe Dr., will now be forced to re-route to allow for the construction of the roundabout itself, which is adjacent to the new Sheridan College campus.8 o& q* G+ t, }- W( \! The disruption is expected to last until at least Aug. 22 when work is scheduled to be completed.

It instructs drivers to slow down when approaching the roundabout; yield to all those already in the roundabout before entering; merge with the traffic in the roundabout when safe; continue counter-clockwise; and exit using right signal as they approach their exit.

" x8 b9 y) n* \8 i6 T1 |2 \Experts believe roundabouts reduce the severity of collisions by 75 per cent. For one thing, they eliminate high-speed T-bone crashes that are often fatal at signalled intersections. Head-on collisions are eliminated. Roundabouts are virtually maintenance-free and don’t require traffic signals.

The European-style ‘traffic circles,’ once considered archaic, are slowly being introduced in many parts of the United States and Canada in locations where major upgrades are needed or bridge-building can be avoided.9 X; _. d, u" \" j* \, j
Two Peel intersections being studied for roundabout feasibility are Queen St. at Mississauga Rd. and Mayfield Rd. at Hwy. 50.

It’s estimated eliminating traffic signals can save $150,000 plus $7,000 in annual maintenance costs. There already are Ministry of Transportation minimum standards to be met in designing and building them.) `$ z g I" |% L- e5 w$ {' k {
Some United Kingdom studies have concluded that roundabouts are up to 90 per cent safer than signalled intersections. 8 z! a5 t/ F- |& x) Z
